What is sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide made of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), the part of the natural hormone responsible for its activity.

It is short-acting: it is cleared from the body quickly, producing a brief signal to the pituitary gland, similar to the body's own GHRH pulses.

Whether sermorelin is appropriate for you is a decision your clinician makes based on your health evaluation.

How sermorelin works

Sermorelin binds to GHRH receptors on the pituitary gland and prompts it to release the body's own growth hormone. Growth hormone in turn signals the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Because sermorelin works upstream of growth hormone, the body's normal feedback controls stay in place. Your clinician sets the dose and schedule.

Important safety information

Who should not use sermorelin: people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cancer, or are allergic to sermorelin or its ingredients.

Common side effects: injection-site redness, itching, or pain; joint or muscle pain; swelling in the hands or feet; numbness or tingling; headache; and flushing.

Tell your clinician if you have diabetes or high blood sugar, a history of cancer, or take other hormone medications. Growth hormone–related therapies can raise blood sugar, so your clinician may check glucose and IGF-1 levels during treatment.

Stop use and seek medical care right away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as a rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list. Review all risks and side effects with your clinician.

Was sermorelin ever an FDA-approved drug?
